Club Helpers

Many children and young people from refugee backgrounds have no one to help them with their schoolwork. Many parents do not understand the English education system or the curriculum and are often unable to speak, read or write enough English to be ahead of their children in their learning. Homework club offers a high ratio of support, and opportunities to increase the social confidence of children as they mix with a different range of people and are exposed to new experiences.

What difference can I make?

Many of our volunteers have been coming to us for a number of years. They build relationships with the children and share their experiences. Children can gain from both the skills of the volunteers and from the increase in confidence from having someone to provide concentrated attention.

“I offer the children support and can encourage academic confidence.”

“The children develop social skills in a safe environment … watching this happen is very rewarding.”

Club has three weekly sessions during term time.

Seniors Club (ages 10 to 14) on Wednesdays,4.30 – 6.30pm

Girl’s GCSE Club (ages 14 to 16) on Wednesdays, 5.30 – 7.00pm

Juniors Club (ages 5-9) on Thursdays, 4.30 – 6.30pm

We ask that volunteers commit to attending one session for at least two terms.

Support for volunteers

We run an induction session for all new Club Helpers, and ensure that they have appropriate ongoing support. All volunteers must attend child protection training and require a CRB check (required for anyone who is working with children). If you already have a CRB to work with vulnerable children, please let us know. If you have any problems or questions, there will always be someone to ask – our club co-ordinators are happy to answer phone enquiries and emails. We may be able to provide travel expenses, but this is dependent on our current funding. If you require travel expenses, please therefore discuss this with us first.
