Letter to local MPs – Support an Early Day Motion to help more refugees

Dear Marsha, Fleur and Rosena, [Wandsworth’s Members of Parliament]

I do hope you’re safe and well.

It has just come to my notice that Helen Hayes MP has put forward an Early Day Motion calling on the government to provide funding for, and speed up the administration of, the Community Sponsorship scheme. The government has committed to extend this scheme to include Afghan refugees (https://edm.parliament.uk/early-day-motion/59083)

This scheme has proved to be an extremely important way of helping settle refugees. While the numbers settled in each borough are  often small, the scheme enables local groups to raise awareness of the plight of refugees and to build community support. We understand that at least four Syrian families were settled across Wandsworth Borough under the scheme

As a participant in Wandsworth Welcomes Refugees, and working with other local refugee groups, we feel this scheme is an important element in keeping an open and welcoming approach to refugees in our borough, and that the government should follow up quickly to enable local groups to take advantage of it.

I would be grateful if you could consider adding your support to the EDM.

Do let me know and happy to discuss this and anything else.

Many thanks,
