On Monday we’re asking everyone to get behind us and raise £5,000 in a week (15-19May) for our Summer Programme. We are taking part in The Summer Give (part of The Big Give, supported by The Childhood Trust) to raise money to improve local refugee children’s education in Wandsworth over the summer holidays.
On Wednesday evening a couple of children, let’s call them Ahmed and Rizek (not their real names – to protect their anonymity), who attend our Love to Learn Homework & Activities Club told us about what they did at our Summer Programme last year. This is what they said:
Ahmed (recalled his time last summer on our Love to Learn Summer Programme, retold with such excitement and smiles):
“Last summer was so fun.We went to Stubbers (Adventure Centre). We did so many things. I was so excited when I was packing and when we arrived I tried things like jet skiing, paddle boating, we went on zip wires, mountain boarding (only 2 people passed the test on this and I was one of them *said with pride*), and rock climbing which was so much fun. I like camping. I’m more confident because of it. I was scared before I went on the jet ski but once I’d done it I was less scared to do other things. I want to take more risks and try more new things.”
Rizek (talked about his trip last summer with a massive grin):
“When we arrived we had to put up our tents. I’d never slept in a tent before. It was a bit weird but really exciting. I couldn’t really sleep to start with. Straight after we went swimming in the lake. We had to wear a wetsuit and look for fish. We then made a fire in the forest and cooked our dinner on it, with a few marshmallows. One night we listened for bats and then we had hot chocolate. I want to go to the mountains next time. I can’t wait. I’m so excited about going again.”
The Summer Give launches at 12pm (midday) on Monday 15th May. The important thing about The Summer Give is that your donation will be doubled until 12pm on Friday 19th May. That’s 72 hours to double your donation!!! So if you donate £20 to KLS then The Summer Give matches your donation with £20 = doubling your donation to £40.

37% percent of children living in Battersea are living below the poverty line (Census, 2011, updated 2015). Over 30% of children in the capital are living in poverty, with 60% of those never having a holiday away from their home. Positive activities and trips during the summer holidays are a crucial part of every child’s education and development. Many of the refugee families we work with are on very low incomes, living in poverty and geographically isolated. Many of their children don’t often leave the borough. Our Summer Programme enable local children in Battersea to have fun, develop their confidence and gain new life experiences. We hope that you will support our Summer Programme through The Summer Give and double your donation.
Please get involved and double your donation here: https://secure.thebiggive.org.uk/project/25624 between 15-19 May.
Thank you in advance.
