Wandsworth Times: Wandsworth launches campaign for child refugee homework club

Wandsworth charity Katherine Low Settlement will be taking part in The Big Give Christmas Challenge. Any amount of money raised up to £5,000 will be doubled for their Homework Club for refugee children.

Katherine Low Settlement has been serving Battersea and the wider Wandsworth community since 1924. There are many new refugee families who find it difficult to understand and integrate with the local education system. This means that many refugee children and young people struggle to engage with their education in Wandsworth.

KLS set up an education project called Love to Learn in 2004 to support those children and young people so that they have the confidence and tools to excel at school. This includes their Homework Club where they complete their school homework, socialise and engage in extracurricular activities including music, drama and art.

Amina’s story is a great example of the powerful impact made through the Love to Learn homework club. Amina started at the club when she was 6 years old. For the first six months she was very shy and wouldn’t speak or engage with any of the adults or children.

With time she has began to make new friendships and started to trust particular volunteers that have given her a lot of time and support with her schoolwork. Amina has now been at the club for a year and a half and she has grown in confidence, she has lots of friends, takes part in all activities, and particularly enjoys music and art. She has been with us on many trips including to a local climbing wall, to the theatre, and she came to our summer weekend camping trip! Amina’s mother has told us that she now speaks out far more in class and feels happy to try new things and make friends.

Donations can be doubled from midday on Tuesday November 27 until midday on Tuesday December 4. KLS look to raise £5000 by the end of their campaign, will you support them?
