Learning Mentor Application form
Learning Mentor role description and person specification
WHAT DO WE DO?
Learning Mentors work with a young person once a week, supporting them with homework and helping them develop extra curricular skills. Learning mentors can choose subjects or areas they feel most confident in as part of their application. Read how our learning mentors enjoyed their placements here: learning mentor quotes.
WHO DO WE WORK WITH?
Our mentees are young people aged 5-18 from refugee backgrounds. Some are new arrivals, and may not have had any prior education. Some were born in the UK and are “behind” their peers in their learning. Others are doing well but can do even better with increased confidence and study skills. We particularly prioritise young people who are new to the UK; who are at transition points from primary to secondary school, or from Year 9 into GCSE; or those who are taking GCSEs.
WHERE?
You will work with a young person in their home. We work with families who live in Wandsworth Borough and nearby in Lambeth and Merton. We make sure we place you with a family who live an easy journey from your home or work.
WHEN?
You commit to an hour a week, normally on a weekday in the early evening for 6 months.
COST?
We will provide resources and reimburse you for all travel expenses.
HOW TO APPLY?
We have a full range of training for you and you do not need to have done this role before. We also have teachers and highly qualified mentors as part of our team. All are welcome! WHAT TRAINING DO VOLUNTEERS RECEIVE?
You are invited to an induction session at our centre near Clapham Junction, including training in safeguarding. These usually take place on a Saturday afternoon. More training about skills to help with homework is provided as you start your placement. Ongoing supervision is provided through email, phone, one-to-one and group meetings. You will be invited to the next induction series once we have received your application.

“His progress has been absolutely amazing so far and he has said on numerous occasions how much the sessions have helped. The first few weeks I doubted whether or not one hour a week can really make such a difference but looking back now it is so noticeable. His confidence has increased ten-fold and I’m really proud of him.” – A learning mentor
“She didn’t tell me what to do, but made me think. She helped me make my writing simpler, more to the point.” – A mentee
