Welcome to Emily Standring, our new fundraiser

Emily Standring joined us recently, as part of our small fundraising team (alongside Aaron and Annabel). She’s lived locally for many years, used our Sure Start services when her children were small and has volunteered with us. Here’s a bit more about Emily in her own words:

I am delighted to have joined Katherine Low Settlement as Fundraising Manager.  I first came to KLS in 2004 when I brought my (then newborn) son to the Sure Start baby groups at the Settlement. It was the first place where I felt I was part of a community in London.  Since then, I have volunteered with the ESOL classes – getting to know the fantastic students and staff – and been involved through my PTA role at a local school.

I have always loved how KLS is rooted in the local community, breaking through some of the ‘bubbles’ that exist in Battersea, and how that enables them to be so responsive to changing needs – we all saw that so clearly during lockdown – and to follow the ethos of ‘working with’ people not ‘doing things to’ them.

Following a career break while my children were young, and having done a lot of volunteer fundraising in that time, I returned to work in fundraising in schools (in Wimbledon and Chelsea) where I acquired skills in community fundraising, major donor programmes and trust/ foundation fundraising. All of which I am now delighted to use to help people living locally.

I have had a lovely immersive welcome to KLS, everyone has been very friendly and helpful in person or over the computer screen. Now that we are starting to come back together, I am learning every day that there are even more things going on at KLS that I was aware of. No day is the same: I have had a friendly tussle with a retired wrestler at an Elders’ coffee morning, interviewed some very impressive candidates for our Youth Ambassador programme and chatted with ESOL students about our favourite places in London. This all makes it very easy to find things to talk about when singing the praises of KLS to potential donors, and as the Settlement has such a successful fundraising history there is a wealth of resources to build on.

I have never worked so close to home before. As a member of St Mary’s church and a regular at Guts & Glory gym I could now easily never leave Battersea, but when I do venture beyond SW11 I am a keen theatregoer and am looking forward to lots of great shows now their doors have reopened.
