Battersea Coronavirus Angels – Update (14May20)

Canon Simon Butler, Vicar of St Mary’s Battersea (and a trustee of KLS), is writing a weekly e-news to the Coronavirus Angels volunteers. As we’re a partner in this new venture we thought we should reproduce it here as it’s full of interesting and relevant stuff!

Dear fellow Angels,

This week’s newsletter is a little shorter than usual, as we are in the middle of our series of daily conversations about the effect of the pandemic and the lockdown in Battersea, and how we might respond in the longer term. They continue to the end of the week and you are welcome to join us at either 12.45pm (Password 828261) or 4.15pm (Password 565323).

Befriender Training: We have a second opportunity to find out about becoming a telephone befriender next Monday at 2pm – 3.15pm. If you would like to join a training session on telephone befriending next week, you can do so here. The password is 116316. We’re looking to build our team of befrienders, especially as it’s clear that the longer people have to stay indoors, the harder it is becoming to cope.

Face Masks: We have a modest supply of face masks made by some lovely stitchers from Central St Martin’s School of Art & Design. If you would like one for your Angels work, please contact David at [email protected]

Volunteer Mapping: Thanks to a couple of lovely people, we now have a system for mapping our volunteers. This is helping when matching people to tasks.

TV Documentary: We have been talking to a researcher about a programme being planned by a production company about experiences of lockdown. Who knows, Angels and the people it helps may feature in the coming months.

Volunteering with Love to Learn: One of the most amazing projects at Katherine Low Settlement is their Love to Learn team, which supports refugee children in their education. If you might be interested in being a Learning Mentor for one of their students, please do contact Lisa at [email protected] or call 020 7223 2845.

Thank you everyone.

Best wishes

Simon Butler
