Dear Friends,
Please help us raise £12,000 for KLS’ Summer Programme for refugee children. Our ‘Champions for Children’ campaign is now OPEN and you can get your donation doubled via a generous match-funding scheme.
We’re taking part in the Summer Give again, this year called ‘Champions for Children’, with support from The Childhood Trust and Francis Holland School. Our aim is to raise enough raise money to give the refugee young people we work with a summer to remember. In doing so we will improve their education and help them cope with the challenges they’re facing during this pandemic.
KLS’ Love to Learn Summer Programme for refugee children living in poverty in London.
Did you know that 37% percent of children living in Battersea are already living below the poverty line? (Census, update 2015). Coronavirus has increased feelings of isolation, many families have lost their jobs due to the pandemic and are living in food poverty, this in turn is taking its toll on physical and mental health.Help us give these children a summer to remember for all the right reasons.
Positive activities and trips during the summer holidays are a crucial part of every child’s education and development.Last year you helped us to offer 424 children the opportunity to take part in trips and activities during the summer holidays. Fatima, age 11, told us recently, “I love the summer. Sometimes I am so excited to see my friends I can’t sleep. If I didn’t get to g somewhere with Love to Learn I would just be near my house or inside being bored.”
This summer our Love to Learn Summer Programme will look a little different but it will enable local children in Battersea to have fun, develop their confidence and gain new life experiences. We have tons of ideas which will make sure everyone is safe, socially distanced and most importantly having fun! We are planning, to provide art, baking and activity packs for virtual workshops, host small group activities and workshops in the open air, trips to the park, and to facilitate family days out. We hope that you will support our Summer Programme through the Big Give and double your donation.

[Hello Summer (KLS Summer Give: 23-30 June) on Biteable]
Can you help children like Abdul, Hassan and Yusef?
Originally from Syria, the boys came to London from a refugee camp in Jordan. They have been coming to our Love to Learn Junior Homework Club for over a year. When the family first arrived they couldn’t speak any English and the children’s behaviour was erratic due to the trauma they had been living through. Over time the children have built great relationships with staff and volunteers and their confidence in the Club environment has grown. All the boys have flourished with us. For example, after he has done his homework, Hassan plays with Lego every week with one volunteer, who he has known since he arrived. They have built a strong and trusting relationship with each other.
The whole family came on seven trips with us during summer 2019, including a trip with 70 other families to a large farm in Kent, to Battersea Park, cooking and footballs clubs. Their mum, Halima, said they would have otherwise just stayed at home. Halima has found it extremely difficult to adjust to life in London and has suffered with her mental health. She speaks little English and was scared to go to places alone with her children. During the summer the family came with us on two beach trips, where they all swam in the sea!
