All this week we’re raising vital funds for our Love to Learn education programme, which offers educational, practical and emotional support to refugee young people and their families. KLS does this through homework clubs, GCSE study groups, youth clubs, mentoring and advice and casework. Please make a donation today and it will be immediately doubled! You can donate here.
Lockdown has been particularly difficult for our young people because of their interrupted schooling. A lack of digital devices, data and skills to attend school online. A lack of learning support at home. Low confidence. For some, Special Education Needs have not been addressed. Alongside living in overcrowded housing and the loss of household income and all the strains this puts on family life. And there’s more.
During the pandemic this support has been even more vital. We have continued to help families via online clubs, one-to-one phone calls, home visits, and an extensive summer programme of workshops and activities. We have also provided more than 150 laptops and tablets to Love to Learn families to ensure children are able to safely access school online.
‘Life in Lockdown’: watch this short film
To find our more we’ve made a short film about life in lockdown, and the support we’ve provided to one particularly family, the amazing Sheikhow family. Amina, the mother, told us, “Lockdown was quite hard when we started because I have a small home and I don’t know how to help my children how to learn at home. The children at secondary, they learn all day, and the primary, they called a lot and said ‘ do this, do that…’ . It was all too stressful…”.
Let Amina and her children tell you more about their lockdown experience here:
